IIT Delhi cuts off more than half of its carbon emission

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has become the first Central Government funded Technical Institute (CFTI) to reduce its carbon footprint by more than 50 per cent. Recently, the institute had signed a bilateral power purchase contract with a hydro power generator in Himachal Pradesh for 2 Megawatt (MW). According to an official, about 14000 tonnes of CO2 emissions will be reduced annually by buying 2 MW of power exclusively from ‘green’ generators. The institute said that due to open access provisions in Electricity Act 2003, it is possible to buy power from the generators of their choice through bilateral contracts or energy exchange, for large consumers of power like IIT Delhi
